– Middle Years Programme 5 (Year 1)

This year is spent developing the skills and knowledge required to be successful in the two year IB Diploma Programme with a focus on English as an academic language. Students will improve their spoken and written proficiency in English while studying a broad range of subjects, and in the spring term students choose six subjects to study for the IB –Diploma Programme.

– Diploma Programme 1 and 2 (Year 2–3)

The IB Diploma Programme. You choose six subjects and study them for two years each, with a greater depth and breadth than any other academic programme in the country. You develop skills of critical thinking, research, social and emotional management through our Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essay, and Creativity, Activity, and Service core components. Each of these Core elements of the IB allows you to channel your passion for academic and personal growth.

The IB Diploma 6 subject areas

1. Language A – HL and SL: English A Literature, English A Language and Literature, Swedish A Language and Literature, Self-taught A Literature SL.

2.    Language Acquisition – HL and SL: English B, French B, Spanish B, Spanish ab initio(beginner Spanish), Swedish B.

3.    Individuals and Societies – HL and SL: History, Economics, Psychology.

4.    Science – HL and SL: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Systems and Societies SL.

5. Mathematics – HL and SL: Analysis and Approaches, Applications and Interpretation SL.

6.    The Arts – HL and SL: Visual Arts.

Students choose 3 Higher Level (240 hrs of study) and 3 Standard Level subjects (150 hrs of study), one subject from each of the subject groups.

Group 6 Visual Arts is an elective subject at ISH, and students who do not choose to take Visual Arts can choose their 6th subject from the offerings in Groups 1, 2, 3, or 4.

In addition to studying 6 subjects, students also complete the IB Diploma Core components:Theory of Knowledge,CAS & Extended Essay.

6 Subjects, maximum 7 points per subject: 6 x 7 = a possible 42 points 3 points possible for combined attainment in the IB Diploma Core Subjects, Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay. Total possible points: 45 (A minimum of 24 points are required to achieve the IB Diploma).

During the first year, the school emphasizes learning of the English terminology within each subject. What matters most is your eagerness to practice English and refine your use of it in written and spoken form. In addition to English, most Diploma students continue to study Swedish, sometimes in combination with learning a third language like French or Spanish.

We do not have a minimum points criteria to enter the program. We have an internal testing procedure for students that apply. Students complete entrance tests in Mathematics, English and participate in a short interview. We also look at your Year 9 grades. The minimum number of points to be considered for testing are 120.

The IB Diploma program does not follow one pathway e.g. natural sciences or economy. Rather, the program allows you to choose the subjects that you are most interested in or that you need to study to enter university. Each student has the opportunity to personalise their Diploma.

Our students get university places in Sweden and a broad range of countries around Europe and the world. That is the beauty of the IB Diploma. The qualification is globally recognized and in fact many universities seek out IB Diploma graduates as they know how well prepared they are for university study.

Students will receive information sessions about general university requirements throughout MYP5 to DP2. We provide a university research platform called BridgeU where students can build their profile and get relevant matches of university programmes. All students are welcome to book an individual session with our Career Guidance Counselor and will receive support during their university application process.
